Chelsea supporters on social media went into an emotional meltdown after they saw Mason Mount and Andriy Shevchenko’s interaction on Saturday.

England booked their place in the European Championship semi-final after they dismantled Shevchenko’s Ukraine 4-0 in Rome.

The former Chelsea striker’s national side had gone above expectations to reach this stage of the tournament, but their fairy tale was hit by a wave of English realisation.

After the full-time whistle, Shevchenko was very gracious in defeat, congratulating Gareth Southgate and each of his victorious squad.

One image that stood out most to Blues fans was the sight of him and Mount embracing in the middle of the pitch.

Here’s how they reacted on Twitter:

Any sight of Chelsea past and present usually incurs a wave of emotion from the Stamford Bridge faithful.

Mount was only seven when Shevchenko signed for the Blues back in 2006 for a then club-record fee.

His highly anticipated arrival did not hit the heights of the days he spent with AC Milan, yet the Ukraine boss still departed with an FA Cup and League Cup winners’ medal.

Fast track to present day and Mount is now firmly waving the Blues flag.

Already triumphant in the Champions League, the 22-year-old could well be crowned king of Europe if England can reach this Sundays’ final.
