Ornstein identifies the managers who could take over from Lampard in future

David Ornstein has identified a list of potential alternatives for Frank Lampard if the Chelsea manager did lose his job, on the Athletic’s Youtube channel.

A thunderstorm of speculation rained down upon Lampard’s future after the 3-1 loss to Manchester City, with the journalist confirming that his position was “under serious threat”.

Those clouds have gradually begun to clear, although Ornstein did pick out several stellar names from the coaching world who Chelsea may want to consider for their dugout further down the line.

One of the standouts is Thomas Tuchel, free for service having been dismissed from his position on Christmas Day by Paris St Germain. Ornstein believes his presence could be highly beneficial for Chelsea’s miss-firing German stars, despite questions over his reputation.

Another name mentioned was Max Allegri, who is also on the free-agent spectrum having left his post at Juventus in 2019, following five consecutive Serie A titles.

Ornstein also admitted that any approaches for the charismatic figure of Julian Nagelsmann would “likely have to wait until the summer”. RB Leipzig are flying in the Bundesliga, also securing knockout football for the Champions League, so they’d have no thoughts of surrendering their 33-year-old boss.

He said: “Its possible Lampard benefits from the current state of the managerial market. For example, Pochettino: greatly admired by the Chelsea hierarchy, has recently joined PSG. Another who people rate highly, Marcelino, formally of Valencia and Villarreal, has just joined Athletic Bilbao.

“One of the most promising coaches in world football, Julian Nagelsmann, has guided RB Leipzig to a champions league knockout stages, so any club wanting him will most likely have to wait until the summer.

“Chelsea have considered Nagelsmann previously, I don’t think they were convinced. I’d be intrigued to see if they are in the future. It would open the interesting prospect of Chelsea going down the German route, if Lampard is dismissed and they need to rejuvenate the form of Havertz and Werner, may also bring in names like Thomas Tuchel, whose reportedly already been pushed to Chelsea since leaving PSG, although there are some concerns in football about his character and ability to deal with big club personalities and politics.

“What about Max Allegri, another free agent. Chelsea have gone Italian in the pass with conte and Sarri, mixed results, I think there may be a bit of reluctance to do so again for now. And domestically, Brendan Rodgers name has been mentioned a lot.”

We still don’t think that Lampard should be sacked any time soon. He deserves time to remedy the current situation.

But, if Lampard was removed from the helm, Allegri looks like a decent solution. His CV is brimming with silverware, and he is no stranger to dealing with big names, having signed Cristiano Ronaldo in his final term.

A tried and tested manager with pedigree at the highest level, Chelsea should keep a watchful eye of his movements.
