Chelsea have been heavily linked with Gabriel Barbosa this month. The Express had claimed that the Brazilian was Lampard’s number one January target, but a move has not materialised. According to Calcio Mercato, Inter Milan only want £17m for his signature, which could prove to be a steal. The Blues need to consider a move for the 23-year-old.
During a recent loan spell with Brazilian side Flamengo, Barbosa began to attract interest from around Europe. In 43 games for the club, he scored 34 goals and provided 11 assists. This included the goals that won his side the infamous Copa Libertadores.
He has since returned to Inter where he is yet to feature. The Italian club does not see Barbosa as having a future at the club. They are willing to let him move on, but only if their asking price is met.
If the powerful forward made a move to Stamford Bridge, he would initially play second fiddle to Tammy Abraham. However, he would feature in cup competitions and could push the England star for a starting spot in years to come.
His hold up play, finishing, and aerial ability make him particularly well suited to the way Chelsea play and at £17m, a move would come with little risk. If Barbosa did not adapt well to English football, the Blues would not have wasted a huge transfer fee. Also, his sell-on value would still be high due to his age and previous success in Brazil.
