The Evening Standard has reported that Jose Mourinho is keeping tabs on Willian’s contract situation. His current deal is up in the summer and Tottenham are said to be interested. Chelsea cannot let this happen and here is why.
Willian has, on the whole, been much improved for Chelsea this season. He was disappointing against Newcastle on Saturday but has improved under Frank Lampard this season. His experience has proved vital in a young Blues side and he needs to be tied down to a new deal.
Losing him to Tottenham would arguably be the worst possible outcome. Firstly, the North London club are one of Chelsea’s main rivals for fourth spot. Strengthening a rival is a cardinal sin of the transfer window and usually ends up coming back to bite the seller later down the line.
Also, Willian’s experience could be a crucial part of the development of Chelsea’s young forwards. Tammy Abraham, Christian Pulisic, and Callum Hudson-Odoi are all under the age of 23 and could learn a lot from the 31-year-old Brazilian.
He has been at Chelsea for seven years now and has seen it all during his time with the club. The winger has won titles, lost finals, been in title races and come through some tough periods. Willian’s time at Stamford Bridge has been a rollercoaster but the lessons he has learned along the way must be passed on to the youngsters making their way into the senior side.
There is also the small matter of the ‘he hates Tottenham’ chant. Chelsea fans’ chant for Willian states that he dislikes their London rivals after the transfer saga in 2013. If he were to make a move across the capital, it would hurt Blues fans.
