Our view: Chelsea need to make a move for Thiago Alcantara

Chelsea are missing something in midfield. Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante are all brilliant players but lack a cutting edge going forward. The Blues are not creating enough from the middle of the park, and have to consider signing Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara.

The Spanish midfielder could be set to leave the Bavarian club at the end of the season as they plan a summer exodus. Bild has reported that a number of the club’s big names could leave at the end of the campaign, including Thiago.

The Blues need to be in the conversation for the 28-year-old midfielder. He has not had the opportunities he deserves in Munich this season and will surely be keen on a move to England.

He has made two assists in just four Champions League starts this campaign. His dynamic play and impressive dribbling will give Chelsea the extra bite they need in midfield. He is in a similar mold to Mateo Kovacic but offers that little bit more in an attacking sense.

The Spain international has been deployed mainly in a defensive midfield role for Bayern this season. However, he is more than capable of playing in a more advanced role and could be of real use to Frank Lampard.

Thiago’s passing range is arguably his best attribute. He would provide Chelsea with a player that can see passes most would never. The former Barcelona man can unlock the most stubborn of defences, and would solve the problem the Blues are having with breaking down teams that sit deep.
