Chelsea have been linked with several creative midfielder and wingers this month. They are lacking a cutting edge and need a player that can games in an instant. Philippe Coutinho could be that man and the Blues should consider a summer move for the Brazilian international.
Currently on loan at Bayern Munich, the 27-year-old has had a relatively good season. In 16 Bundesliga appearances, Coutinho has scored six goals and provided five assists. They are great returns for a player that has been deployed in midfield for parts of the season.
Bild has reported that Munich will not be exercising their option to buy the Brazilian in the summer. The club’s hierarchy have not been impressed enough by his performances to justify spending £102 million (Daily Mail) to sign him permanently from parent club Barcelona.
Whether the Catalan club see Coutinho as having a future in the first team is yet to be seen. He struggled at the Nou Camp after initially impressing at the club. The former Liverpool man could seek a fresh start in the summer and Chelsea need to consider a move.
The threat he provides in an attacking sense, whether it be from a clever pass, brilliant strike from range or late move into the box would take the Blues to the next level. It could solve the club’s creativity issues.
A move for Coutinho would certainly not come cheap. However, Roman Abramovich is keen on making a marquee signing (Transfer Window Podcast) and the Brazilian star would certainly be that.
