Chelsea have struggled at the back this season. There are questions over whether the four senior centre-backs the Blues currently have at the club are good enough. If Frank Lampard is keen on signing a defender this month, he should consider Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah.
The 23-year-old has impressed once again this season and is a big reason why his current club are sat sixth in the Bundesliga. He dominates aerially and is excellent at organising the Leverkusen defence.
The Blues have already conceded 29 Premier League goals this season. That is just ten less than they conceded in the entirety of the last campaign and there is clearly an issue at the back. Talks have rumbled on throughout the month about the possibility of bringing Nathan Ake back to the club, but Sky Sports have now ruled that out.
The Times reported that the club have made an inquiry about Brighton’s Lewis Dunk. However, concerns remain over his mobility and the lack of longevity that the 28-year-old can offer. Tah, on the other hand, has plenty of years ahead of him and could become a key part of the Chelsea backline for the foreseeable future. He would help the young Blues defence with their organisation and would offer an experience that few of them possess.
Despite being just 23, the German defender has over 150 appearances for his current club and plays with a seniority that the likes of Fikayo Tomori and Andreas Christensen do not. Leverkusen, like most clubs, will not want to lose one of their key men in the middle of the season. However, it might be worth an inquiry from those at Stamford Bridge.
