Ben Chilwell has been heavily linked with Chelsea this month. The Daily Mail has previously reported that the Blues were considering a move for the young English left-back but is he the right long-term left-back for Frank Lampard’s side?
The 23-year-old has been a crucial part of a Leicester side that has been seriously impressive this season. However, his form has dipped in recent weeks and he was left out of the squad for the game against Burnley.
The young England defender has made his way into the senior national team and will be hoping to start in the European Championships in the summer. A move to a Champions League club could help him achieve that goal. However, Chelsea should consider focusing on other targets.
Chilwell will be an extremely expensive signing. English players often come at a premium and Leicester have no need to sell considering the position they are in. The Foxes are six points ahead of Chelsea in third and could secure Champions League qualification themselves this season.
His current contract runs until June 2024, so any transfer fee would be a hefty one. Although Chilwell is likely to go on to become one of Europe’s best full-backs, the price would be too much. Other options in the market will be more worth it for the Blues.
Alex Telles is one example of this. The Brazilian is reportedly not keen on signing a new deal at FC Porto and could be allowed to leave this month (A Bola). He has a release clause of just 40 million Euros and is arguably a better left-back than Chilwell currently.
