Chelsea are set for a fight to keep promising right-back Tariq Lamptey. The Sun has reported that Lille are currently in talks with the Blues about a deal for the young defender to join the French club at the end of the season.
He has made just three appearances for the senior side but is already attracting interest from other European clubs. Although it would be a shame to lose a young talent like Lamptey, Chelsea should not worry too much about where his future lies. Here is why.
Lampard clearly trusts the 19-year-old full-back, or he would not have brought him on to make a difference in the club’s 2-1 win over Arsenal. His lack of subsequent appearances prove that the defender is not at the top of the pecking order.
That is because of one man. Reece James. The 20-year-old full-back has been seriously impressive for the club this season and has made the right-sided spot his own. He has made 19 appearances in all competitions and is seen by some as the most promising talent currently at Chelsea.
Losing Lamptey would be a shame, but the Blues are in safe hands at right-back. James could be the club’s starter in the position for the next ten years or more. He looks more developed physically than Lamptey and has more senior experience after a loan spell at Wigan last year.
It would be a safer option for Lampard to consider loaning Lamptey next season, but tying him down to a new deal without a clear path to the first-team could be difficult. His current deal runs out in the summer and he could leave for nothing when the end of the season comes round.
