Our view: Defeat to Newcastle proves that Chelsea need January additions

Chelsea fell to a disappointing late defeat against Newcastle on Saturday. Lampard’s side dominated throughout but could not find a breakthrough before Isaac Hayden’s late winner left the Blues returning to London with nothing.

It is the latest in a string of what seem like avoidable defeats for the club. Something is missing in the Chelsea side at the moment and action must be taken. Some January additions need to be made if Lampard is to achieve the Champions League qualification that the club craves.

There is no denying how well this young side has done this season. No one predicted them to be fourth at this stage and in the Champions League knockout stages. However, to get to the next level, some new players are needed.

The midfield is lacking a spark. N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic, among others, all provide some great quality, but something is missing. There is no player that will change the game with a brilliant pass or mazy run. Chelsea are missing a Kevin De Bruyne type player in their midfield.

El Desmarque has linked Real Madrid midfielder Isco with a move to Stamford Bridge and he could be the man to sort the Blues midfield out. But that is not the only problem.

There is also a lack of cutting edge in attack. Willian has been impressive this season and Callum Hudson-Odoi is looking promising, but they are just not impacting games enough. A player like Jadon Sancho needs to come in if Chelsea are to challenge for the Premier League any time soon.
