Chelsea are in desperate need of some more firepower upfront. Tammy Abraham cannot carry the goalscoring burden alone and some more strength in depth is needed. Edinson Cavani can provide that, and here is why he is the striker the Blues should pursue this month.
The obvious starting point is the Urugyuan striker’s goalscoring record. He has been deadly everywhere he has played, scoring 339 in 548 club appearances. His record since arriving at his current club has been particularly impressive. During his time in France, Cavani has 198 goals and 41 assists in 293 games. That is almost a direct goal contribution in every game – a remarkable record.
The 32-year-old will bring goals to the Chelsea attack. He has proven throughout his entire career that he knows where the goal is and will make an impact in most games. Despite his age, the Urugyuan still possesses an eye for goal and would be effective in the Premier League with his clever movement and runs in behind.
There is also the value that his experience will bring to this young Blues squad. The former Napoli man has been at the top of the game for ten years now and will have so much he can teach the likes of Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi. Signing Cavani can only benefit their development and could help the Blues in the long run.
His aerial ability is another thing that makes him an appealing target. Reece James has showcased his superb crossing ability in recent games. Cavani would thrive off deliveries like those and would fit well into the style of play Chelsea are currently utilising.
If a move suits the player and his current club, Lampard has to do everything he can to secure Cavani. He would be a short-term fix to the club’s striker problems and will help the youngsters grow and become better players in the future.
