Our view: Emerson's performance shows how much Chelsea need left-back

Emerson came back into the Chelsea side for last night’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal. His performance against the Gunners showed just how much Lampard needs to sign a new left-back this month.

The Blues threw away three points on Tuesday against an Arsenal side who had 10-men for the majority of the contest. They were slow in possession once again and could not find the cutting edge that was needed to put the game beyond their opposition.

There were several culprits for Chelsea’s lack of attacking impetus. Emerson, who was signed by the Blues for a fee of £17.5m in 2018 (Mail), was certainly one of those. The Italian tried to make an impact going forward but his end product was poor throughout.

Lampard currently sets up his side to put a lot of crosses into the box. Emerson does not have the ability to consistently put in good deliveries from wide positions. He also looked uncomfortable against Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe at times and was booked for a cynical foul on the winger.

Arsenal’s late equaliser also came from the 25-year-old being turned t0o easy by Hector Bellerin. Chelsea have been linked with several left-backs this month and must do everything they can to sign one before the window ends.

Alex Telles is the latest name to be mentioned and could be the ideal option. A Bola has reported that the Brazilian could be on his way out of Porto this month. He has scored five goals, along with five assists this season and would bring a threat on the left-side that Chelsea are currently missing.
