Chelsea have a real creativity problem of late. Lampard’s side will completely dominate games and have much of the ball, but seem unable to twist the screw and put games beyond opponents. One man that could solve this issue is the soon to be returning Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
The imposing midfielder is coming towards the end of a grueling injury lay-off which has seen him out of action for eight months. The English midfielder has been pictured back training with the first-team. His return cannot come soon enough.
Loftus-Cheek has been severely missed since rupturing his achilles towards the end of last season. The Blues attributes the England international possesses are exactly what Lampard’s side are currently missing in the midfield.
The 24-year-old scored ten goals and provided five assists in 40 appearances in all competitions for the club last season. His strength, driving runs and link-up play with team-mates make him an extremely impactful midfielder that regularly causes other teams big problems.
Although Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho, and N’Golo Kante have been impressive at times this season, they do not carry anything close to the goal threat that Loftus-Cheek does. When he eventually returns to the first-team squad, it will be like a new signing for Lampard.
That is providing that he can get back to the levels he showed last season. Eight months is a long injury lay-off and it will take time to get the match sharpness back. However, if RLC can replicate his form last season, or even better it, he could be the missing link for Chelsea going forward.
