Chelsea have been linked with a whole host of potential January targets. From strikers to full-backs, the Blues have been linked with them all. But one name that has not been mentioned is Manchester City defender John Stones.
The England international has fallen out of favour with Pep Guardiola recently and has only made 10 Premier League appearances this season. Reports in The Sun suggest that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has made Stones his number one transfer target – should Chelsea join the race for his signature?
Lampard’s Chelsea side have struggled at the back this season. Each of the club’s centre-back options has had their moments which has led to speculation about a new defender coming in at Stamford Bridge this month. Nathan Ake and Lewis Dunk are two of the names linked with a move to the club, but Stones could be a more suitable option.
He was a crucial part of a Manchester City team that won two league titles and is a key part of Gareth Southgate’s England team. His experience could help nurture Chelsea’s own young English talent at the back and would have a positive impact on their development.
A move would also make sense for Stones. The 25-year-old will want to be playing first-team football in the second half of the season to ensure of his Euro 2020 place.
Whether the Blues need to sign a centre-back this month is up for debate. Two clean sheets in the last two games have alleviated the defensive concerns. Andreas Christensen has come back into the side and proven that he can still be an important player for Chelsea. Depending on the fee, Stones might be considered an unnecessary buy for the club, despite the benefits he would bring.
