Chelsea have become less reliant on N’Golo Kante this season. Some injury problems and changes in the system have meant that the Frenchman is not the regular fixture he has been in the past.

At 28-years-old, Kante may seek one more big move before the end of his career. The Sun has reported that he is eyeing a move to Real Madrid in the summer, but who should the Blues target if they lose the world-class midfielder?

It is almost impossible to replace a player like Kante. His energy in midfield is better than any player in world football and he is a nightmare to play against. The Chelsea man was a crucial part of the France team that won the 2018 World Cup, and he has been key to the Blues’ recent success.

One player that could replace him is Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure. He has been moved to a slightly more advanced role under Nigel Pearson and has thrived in recent weeks. Despite the Hornets’ difficult start to the season, Doucoure impressed when used as a box-to-box or more defensive midfielder.

Sky Sports have reported that Watford will do everything they can to keep their star man, but if Kante left, Chelsea would have a lot of money to play with. They could come in with an offer too good to refuse and would satisfy Doucoure’s ambition of Champions League football.

The French midfielder would fill the void left by Kante well and despite not being at the same level just yet, could reach new heights if he were surrounded by players of better quality. The two players have very similar skill sets, and it is certainly an option worth considering if Kante does make a move away from Stamford Bridge.
