Our view: Which striker Chelsea should sign as Tammy Abraham backup
Chelsea have been linked with almost every forward on the market this month, the list is endless. But which striker should Lampard make his top priority?
The Blues are in serious need of reinforcements up-front. Tammy Abraham is having a brilliant start to his senior Chelsea career, but cannot carry the burden alone. He scored his 13th league goal against Burnley on Sunday but will not be available every week.
Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud are not considered suitable understudies. The Belgian came in for serious criticism from some Chelsea fans after a poor performance against Nottingham Forest last weekend. Giroud, on the other hand, has barely had a sniff all season, making just seven appearances.
Timo Werner has had the most prolific seasons of any of the names linked with the club. The 23-year-old has scored 18 goals in 17 league games and also provided six assists along the way.
In terms of absolute quality, he may be the best option. However, he is unlikely to be willing to play second fiddle to Abraham. There may also be a number of other clubs in for him and Chelsea may not prove to be the most attractive option for the German.
Habib Diallo and Gabriel Barbosa have also proven themselves to be prolific in recent times. Diallo is thriving in a struggling Metz side in France and Barbosa is finding opportunities hard to come by behind Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku at Inter. These are likely to be more attainable targets for Lampard but carry with them more risk.
Moving onto Dembele. The Lyon striker is playing the football of his life and looking like the real deal. He has 10 goals in 18 league games and has a similar style to Tammy Abraham. Chelsea have already seen a bid rejected and the French club are adamant he will not leave.
However, his attributes make him well suited to the Premier League and he would certainly provide brilliant back up for Abraham. Chelsea legend Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has backed the Blues move for the Frenchman and if that is not a reason to consider signing a player then I don’t know what is.
The Blues should do everything they can to secure the services of the young French striker, whether it be in January or in the summer.
