Owen Hargreaves has been majorly impressed with Chelsea defender Thiago Silva

Owen Hargreaves has picked out Chelsea defender Thiago Silva as a major positive from this season and is amazed the club were able to bring him to Stamford Bridge on a free transfer.

After leaving Paris Saint-Germain in the summer a club legend, the experienced Brazilian decided to take on the challenge of the Premier League for the first time in his career.

Aged 36, there were plenty who doubted whether he’d be able to make the transition to English football, but he’s answered that emphatically.

The centre-back has worn the captain’s armband on occasions this season for the Blues to show what a big influence he’s had in the dressing room in the space of a few months and he’s an ideal role model for younger players to look at.

Hargreaves claims that Silva has been in “majestic form” after he scored a thunderous header on Monday night in the 3-0 Premier League win at home to West Ham.

“Thiago Silva, imagine getting him on a free. The signing that he’s been, he’s been in absolutely majestic form,” Hargreaves said.

The capture of £100,000-a-week star {Spotrac) Silva in the summer on a free is arguably the best of all the signings, as Chelsea have a defensive general that has helped reshape the backline and it’s clear what an authority he has around the group.

Chelsea icon John Terry proved in the closing stages of his playing career what experience in defence can bring, as he was instrumental in the title-winning year in the 2014/15 season, and Silva is similarly thriving as a senior player.
