Pat Nevin has claimed he would like to see Mateo Kovacic recalled to the Chelsea side in midweek for the European fixture away to Russian club Krasnodar.
The Blues face-off against Krasnodar on Wednesday evening in the Champions League group stages and they will be looking to build on a 0-0 draw with Sevilla from the opening round of fixtures.
Frank Lampard’s side have found some defensive steel in recent games by drawing 0-0 with Manchester United at the weekend in the Premier League, but the task now becomes rediscovering the form in front of goal.
Nevin expects Chelsea boss Lampard to rotate in some areas of the midweek Champions League tie and he’s desperate to see Kovacic included.
The 26-year-old was used as an used substitute at the weekend in the Man United draw and he’s not started a match since the Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham on 29 September.
“I am sure he (Lampard) will want as many youthful, energetic and tireless legs on the field as possible… There are the likes of Mateo Kovacic, who could really do with another 90 minutes pretty soon. He should also have plenty of energy to spare,” Nevin told the club’s official website.
Despite having a quiet start to the season, it’s worth noting that Kovacic was named Chelsea’s Player of the Year for the 2019/20 campaign and there is no doubt he’s a talented individual that can have a crucial role moving forward.
He’s found himself stuck behind a midfield pivot of Jorginho and N’Golo Kante in the past couple of months, but he does offer something a little different to them in terms of his agility in possession and the way he can drive forward with intricate dribbles.
It would be a smart move from Lampard to give the Croatian central midfielder his chance in midweek with a rare start this season and he needs minutes to get back to his best.
