Merson says Lukaku gives Chelsea a "new dimension" ahead of Anfield trip

Paul Merson says Chelsea player adds a ‘new dimension’ to their team ahead of Anfield visit

Paul Merson believes that Chelsea frontman Romelu Lukaku gives the Blues a “new dimension” ahead of the trip to face Liverpool on Saturday.

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea visit Anfield tomorrow evening to face rivals Liverpool in a Premier League fixture.

A lot of pre-match attention has been around the upcoming battle between Lukaku and Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk, which looks a mouthwatering contest.

Sky Sports pundit Merson believes that Lukaku gives Chelsea something different in the final third.

The 28-year-old centre-forward can mix his game up. For example, he’s capable of being physically strong and taking the ball into his feet. Alternatively, he can run in behind and show great movement around the box.

“Van Dijk’s pace allows Liverpool to take that risk of playing higher safe in the knowledge he will deal with that ball over the top,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“Lukaku is willing to run, he’s both quick and powerful, and just adds a completely new dimension to Chelsea’s attack, which previously didn’t have powerful runners off the ball and in behind.

“Not many people are willing to run without the ball but Lukaku is, and if Liverpool play that high line all it will take is for Lukaku to latch onto one ball in behind and it’ll be see you later.”

Lukaku can be the next striker Chelsea fans love

For Chelsea fans in the the last couple of decades, they’ve loved a proper No.9 that leads the line by himself.

There are plenty of examples of players that have failed in that role. However, two standout players have shown how effective it can be with a central striker at Stamford Bridge.

Didier Drogba, along with Diego Costa, are the attackers that Lukaku can look towards for inspiration.

The ex-Blues strikers were adored by the Blues faithful during their separates times in West London, so perhaps Lukaku can be the next forward to be a massive success with Chelsea.

It was a dream start with a goal against Arsenal last weekend, but this Saturday’s test away to Liverpool is huge.
