Reece James was full of praise for Chelsea teammate Mason Mount and highlighted the moment when Real Madrid star Luka Modric asked to swap shirts with the midfielder.
The two Chelsea academy graduates have been outstanding performers for the Blues this season, particularly Mount who has also been named the club’s player of the season.
To describe Mount as a key player for Chelsea would be an understatement.
The 22-year-old made 53 appearances in all competitions for the club in 2020/21 alone. To put it into perspective, Chelsea played 56 competitive games all season.
James even said that he did not really need to say anything to convince people about how good Mount has been.
“I think Mason’s performances speak this season for themselves,” James said during his England press conference on Thursday.
“I don’t really need to big him up or say anything.
“I’m sure everyone has their own opinion on how well he’s been playing.
“Yeah, I think a player like Luka Modric asking for his shirt has shown how far he’s come since he first broke into the first team.”
Mount saw Modric as role model
For Mount, the moment he had with Modric after the final whistle in the Champions League semi-final must have been very special.
Back in 2019, he told Goal about how he used to watch the Croatia international on YouTube and learn from him.
Last month, his role model personally wished him good luck for the Champions League final and asked for his shirt.
