Barcelona has reportedly dropped out of the race for Spanish midfielder Dani Olmo, leaving Chelsea with a clear run to sign the youngster. Mundo Deportivo have claimed that the Catalan giants are not interested in making a move for Olmo this month.
This is a boost for the Blues because Barcelona had previously been considered favourites to land his signature. The 21-year-old spent seven years at La Masia, the Barca academy, before moving to Dinamo Zagreb in 2015.
He has gone on to develop into quite the player and was even called up to the senior Spain squad in November. The youngster is beginning to attract suitors from all over Europe after an impressive Champions League campaign with the Croatian side.
Olmo scored three goals and provided three assists in five qualifiers for the competition, before going on to score a further two in the group stages. This included an impressive volley against Premier League champions Manchester City.
The big stage clearly does not phase Olmo. He is a player who could reach the very top of the game if his next move proves to be a success. Whether that will happen at Chelsea is hard to judge.
Lampard already has a plethora of midfield options available to him in the senior squad. There are also young prospects like Conor Gallagher who could reach the same level as Olmo in the future. The Blues have also been linked with Real Madrid midfielder Isco and do not want to end up with too many midfielders. It will only cause the club issues further down the line.
