Report: Chelsea identify two alternatives to Ben Chilwell
Ben Chilwell has been widely reported as one of Chelsea’s main January transfer targets. The Daily Mail reports that the 22-year-old is Lampard’s number one priority, but will he be able to secure the Leicester City full-back? The Foxes are on fire this season and sit 2nd in the Premier League table.
It now appears that the Blues have identified two other targets if they fail to secure the signing of Chilwell. According to Spanish media outlet Marca, Chelsea will explore the possibility of signing Porto full-back Alex Telles or Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico.
Telles is one of the best players in Liga NOS, and would likely come at a cheaper price than Chilwell. He is a well established Brazil international who provides a serious threat going forward. In nine league games, the 26-year-old has scored four goals and provided four assists. That is almost a goal contribution every game, from left-back.
His set-piece prowess will replace what Marcos Alonso offers in that aspect, and he is superior defensively. Porto has eight clean sheets from 12 league games, and Telles has been a big part of that. He would certainly improve Chelsea’s left-back options.
Tagliafico was an integral part of the Ajax side that reached the Champions League semi-finals last time out and has impressed again this season. He has scored an impressive five goals in all competitions, as well as providing two assists.
The Argentinian’s speed and threat going forward would certainly improve Chelsea’s left side. Ajax will not be keen to sell, but with the reported £150m transfer kitty, the Blues could make an offer that is hard to turn down.
