Chelsea have reportedly made an approach to PSG for a loan deal that would see Edinson Cavani join the club until the end of the season. The Times has claimed that Frank Lampard sees this as the best value deal for the Blues due to the Uruguayan’s excessive wage demands.
The Blues are in desperate need of a striker and appear to be stepping up their quest to bring in some reinforcements. It initially looked like any deal would be scuppered by Cavani’s wages, but a short-term loan deal could be a way around it.
The offer reportedly sees Chelsea pay all of the 32-year-old’s £360,000-a-week wage, but only until the season end. This would mean the total cost of the loan would be £7.2m in wages and a further fee of around £5m. When put like that, it sounds like a good deal for the Blues.
The only stumbling block now will be PSG’s inclination to push for a permanent sale this month. The French club reportedly want to sell the Uruguay international for a fee of around £23 million (Times). They may not be keen on a loan deal that does not involve as much income for the club.
Our view – Cavani loan deal would be perfect for Chelsea
Any striker brought into the club permanently this month would probably cost more than the £12.2m this loan deal would, and the quality may not be as high. Cavani is one of Europe’s deadliest strikers and would be extremely effective in this Chelsea side.
If PSG are willing to let the 32-year-old leave on loan this month, Lampard should do everything he can to get a deal over the line. This could be a season-defining transfer for the Blues.
