Chelsea have reportedly sent scouts to watch Roma midfielder Amadou Diawara, according to TuttoMercato. The 22-year-old has become a regular under Paulo Fonseca since his move from Napoli in the summer and is now attracting interest from England.
The Blues had representatives watching the Guinean in Roma’s 2-1 defeat to Juventus on Sunday, and were joined by London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Both clubs are monitoring Diawara’s situation, with the view of making a move in the summer.
The young Roma star is a defensive midfielder who provides cover for the back-line. He is in a similar mold to N’Golo Kante, with interceptions and tackling being two of his top attributes.
It would arguably be a strange move from Chelsea, who are currently well stacked in the midfield areas. Jorginho and Kante are currently used in the most deep-lying positions in the centre and the likes of Billy Gilmour and Conor Gallagher are on the cusp of breaking through. They might see Diawara as a blocker to their progress.
However, the move makes a lot more sense if the club lose Kante in the summer. The Sun has reported that the 28-year-old is seeking a fresh challenge in the summer and is keen on a move to Real Madrid. Losing the World Cup winner would be a big blow for Chelsea. They would need to replace him as soon as possible.
Diawara could be that replacement and would soften the blow of losing someone so influential. He is already impressing on the biggest stages and will only get better in the coming years.
