Report: Chelsea tie-down young star who Lampard called 'solid' for the next two years

Chelsea have activated an optional 12-month extension that will keep Marc Guehi at the club until 2023.

According to The Athletic, Chelsea wanted to lock down the young defender as soon as possible before he returns for pre-season this summer.

Guehi is enjoying a very successful period on loan with Swansea City and could potentially help them into the Premier League next year.

Aiding the Swans Champions promotion would sky rocket his stock even further.

He is already on the radar of several top-flight sides, including Crystal Palace and Southampton, along with foreign interest from Borussia Monchengladbach.

Extended talks over Guehi’s future at Stamford Bridge are set to take place after the campaign’s conclusion.

These will determine whether Chelsea will allow him to spend another term out on loan or sell him for a decent sum.

The 20-year-old is highly regarded within Cobham’s walls, having flourished through the Blues youth system.

Frank Lampard handed him his senior debut back in 2019, calling the centre-back ‘solid’ and a worthy starter in his first team.

Thomas Tuchel will have the chance to get a good look at Guehi when his period with Swansea comes to an end.

Chelsea are on the hunt for a new central defender, which could of course impact the England U21 international.

Also, Tuchel’s approach to academy products is certainly different to Lampard’s and he may opt for experience over potential.

All Guehi can do now is show up for Swansea and make the Blues decision even more difficult.
