Chelsea are reportedly considering a move for Manchester United target Jude Bellingham. The Sun has claimed that United are preparing a £15 million move for the Birmingham youngster to fend of interest from Frank Lampard’s side.
The 16-year-old midfielder is having a breakout season in the Championship and is attracting interest from England’s top clubs. He has played in 24 of Birmingham’s 28 league games this season, scoring four goals and assisting one in the process.
Bellingham is quickly becoming one of the most promising players in England. To be playing this much senior football, at that level, at his age, is unheard of. He could go on to spectacular things if he continues his meteoric rise.
A move to a top Premier League club could be a risk, but a deal that involved a loan back to the Championship might be of interest. The fee rumoured would be astronomical for a man of his age, but it could prove to be a brilliant signing for either club.
Lampard is currently flooding the youngsters in at Chelsea. Several young talents have made first-team debuts this season and Bellingham would fit right into the culture at Stamford Bridge.
The only drawback to any potential move is the uncertainty over the young midfielder’s progression. He is still very young and yet to fully develop physically. It is difficult to predict how good he will become and £15 million would be a big investment.
Chelsea also have a big collection of young midfield talent themselves. Lampard might be better off utilising the players already in the club’s academy.
