Frank Lampard has identified Brazilian forward Gabriel Barbosa as a top transfer target, according to reports in The Daily Express. The Inter Milan forward has just ended a successful loan spell at Flamengo and Chelsea are now interested in securing his signature.
Barbosa has caught the eye during his time in Brazil and scored the two goals that won his side the Copa Libertadores in November. He scored an impressive 25 goals in 29 Brazilian Serie A appearances last season, and also provided nine assists.
His goal record for Flamengo speaks for itself, but for Inter Milan he has just one goal in 10 games.
After being linked with the likes of Timo Werner and Moussa Dembele, it now seems Barbosa is the number one forward target. The 23-year-old could be the easiest target to secure because Inter are strong up-front. Both Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez are having great success at the San Siro, and have years ahead of them at the club.
Barbosa will find it difficult to displace the two of them and may be open to a move to a club with less attacking options. Chelsea also possess a possible bargaining chip in Olivier Giroud. The French striker is attracting interest from former Blues boss Antonio Conte and could seek a move away in January.
It is important to remember that Barbosa has not proved himself in a top league. The jump from the Brazilian league to the Premier League is not always an easy one to make.
If Lampard can secure a deal for a relatively cheap price, it could prove to be a steal. The Brazilian could be tempted with the promise of at least second in the forward pecking order.
