Report: Player set to stay at Chelsea despite his agent's previous admission about January exit plans
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel wants to keep young centre-back Malang Sarr in his squad for the remainder of the season amid interest from a number of clubs, according to Ouest France.
The 22-year-old has played a more prominent role at Chelsea in recent weeks.
Chelsea’s injury problems obviously played a big part, obviously, but Sarr has also stepped up and proved to be a reliable option, as Tuchel pointed out a couple of weeks ago.
The defender himself likely did not expect to make eight starts (in all competitions) when he joined Tuchel’s squad following a loan spell at Porto last summer.
In October, his agent, Federico Pastorello, spoke about his client’s plan to look for another loan opportunity in January.
“Maybe he can go on loan then because maybe he needs one or two seasons playing regularly before coming back, like many players in Chelsea have done,” the agent said at the time.
A few clubs have shown interest in Sarr, according to Ouest France, including Leicester City and AS Roma.
The Frenchman might have changed his mind about leaving given his increased game time, and Tuchel is reportedly keen to keep the player until the end of the season.
Being a left-footed player, the former Nice player is unsurprisingly comfortable playing on the left of the back three, which makes him a valuable backup to Antonio Rudiger at Chelsea.
He is also capable of playing as a left-back, if, like in the last games, Tuchel decides to play with a four-man defence.
