Report: There's now a twist in Chelsea's search for a sporting director, appointment could take number of weeks
Chelsea could now reportedly miss out on appointing Red Bull Salzburg’s Christoph Freund as their new sporting director.
There’s been a significant twist in Chelsea’s pursuit to appoint a sporting director.
It was claimed by Fabrizio Romano very recently that the Blues were set to reach an agreement with Salzburg’s sporting director, Freund, that would see him take up a similar position at Stamford Bridge. The appointment was on the verge of being completed, too.
However, a fresh claim in the media shares a new update.
Chelsea could miss out on Freund
According to The Athletic, there’s now a “good chance” that Freund will stay where he is with Austrian champions Salzburg.
It is explained that talk of the 45-year-old linking up with Chelsea was premature.
The report explains the London club considered him their top target, but they are in discussions with alternative candidates to become their new sporting director.
Also, this new appointment could actually take “weeks to conclude”.
Let’s hope that this next appointment can be made with plenty of time to spare before the January window.
The new ownership have made some really important decisions so far as part of their reshuffle at the Bridge, with Graham Potter replacing Thomas Tuchel in the manager’s dugout the obvious standout change.
The senior role of sporting director is going to be a key appointment they need to get right, though.
