Thomas Tuchel has promoted Levi Colwill to the Chelsea first-team whilst Andreas Christensen recovers from injury.
Goal reported that Colwill had been added to the Blues senior squad as cover for Christensen.
Colwill call up
The 18-year-old joins fellow academy products Tino Livramento, Tino Anjorin and Lewis Bate to be called up by Tuchel this season.
Colwill has been at the club for a decade, but is yet to step foot out of the realms of development football.
It’s highly unlikely the young defender will play any part in tonight’s Premier League match against Arsenal, other than filling a space on the bench.
Come back soon, Chris
Christensen picked up a tendon problem in last weekend’s win over Manchester City and is aiming to be fit for Saturday’s FA Cup final with Leicester City.
He’s been a massive part of the Blues recent defensive overhaul. It would be a great shame for him to miss out on the cup curtain closer.
Chelsea do have decent cover in central defence, although Colwill just adds that extra layer of protection.
Plus, he is left-footed, a feature that Tuchel hasn’t been fortunate enough to field yet.
There may still be a chance for Colwill and his youth teammates to earn a start under the German coach before the campaign concludes.
Defeating Arsenal and Leicester in the league should confirm Chelsea’s top four place, meaning the final day game with Aston Villa is a free hit.
All manner of fresh faces could get a run out at Villa Park on May 23rd, giving their older colleges a rest after an exhausting seven months of action.
