BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand says Chelsea’s squad has the quality required to be fighting for trophies this season despite a far from ideal start.
With just two wins from their first six Premier League games, Chelsea currently sit tenth in the table. Meanwhile the penalty shoot-out defeat to Tottenham Hotspur means the League Cup is out of the question.
But Ferdinand still thinks Lampard has enough quality in his squad to compete for a trophy.
When asked about his expectations for Chelsea this season, the former England and Manchester United defender told BT Sport (via Metro): “Champions League football, finishing in the Champions League positions and winning a cup.
“I think that’ll be the demands from Frank himself.
“Frank’s a winner. He’s accustomed to winning at Chelsea. He knows what the owners are asking but also the fans there.
“And I think he’s got a squad together that are going to be capable of challenging for some silverware once they get in that groove and in that rhythm.”
On paper, the arrivals of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and others this summer should make Chelsea a trophy-winning side.
However, as we’ve seen so far, new players need time to adapt, particularly if they haven’t played in the Premier League before.
As Ferdinand points out, Chelsea will have to find their groove, rhythm – and certainly consistency – to bag a trophy.
