'Second-choice GK': Some Chelsea fans react to inclusion of Petr Cech in Chelsea PL squad

Some fans were understandably in disbelief that Petr Cech has been included in Chelsea’s Premier League squad for the 2020/21 season.

Remember the widely spread videos of the 38-year-old being involved in training sessions?

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard previously admitted that Cech has arguably been in charge of the goalkeeping department.

“I lean heavily on him when it comes to the goalkeepers day-to-day and planning for the future so he was very influential,” the manager told the media last month (via FourFourTwo).

But apparently, those training sessions were likely to keep him fit for a potential return to the football pitch.

Aside from his primary role as a technical and performance advisor, a goalkeeping coach — as Lampard pointed out, Cech has now officially become part of Chelsea’s Premier League squad.

“Petr Cech has been included in the squad as emergency goalkeeper cover,” the club announced via its official website.

“This is a precautionary step due to the unprecedented conditions currently caused by the Covid-19 crisis.

“He takes up a position as a non-contract player.”

As unbelievable as it sounds, Cech is actually a few months younger than Chelsea’s backup goalkeeper Willy Caballero which makes the decision somewhat sensible.

And some fans were ecstatic with the news of the official return of a club legend to the squad.
