Shaun Wright-Phillips has named Chelsea defenders Kurt Zouma, Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell as three players that have been a “revelation” so far this season.
Zouma, 26, has been fantastic in the opening few months of the season in the heart of the backline and looks far more consistent than he was last year at Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, 36-year-old Thiago Silva joined in the summer to become Zouma’s centre-back partner and his authoritative presence looks like it’s helping the entire squad.
England left-back Chilwell is another new signing that has settled in the blink of an eye in the Chelsea XI, fixing what had been a problem area in the squad.
The 23-year-old full-back gives Chelsea such a great balance between attack and defence, plus right-back Reece James deserves a mention for completing the resilient back four.
Ex-Blues winger Wright-Phillips picked out the trio when discussing how his former club are faring during this campaign.
“I think Kurt Zouma, with obviously Thiago and Chilwell in there, have been a revelation.” Wright-Phillips told talksport (12:25pm, 11 December).
It’s unclear yet on if Chelsea can build on an excellent start to the season to really challenge for silverware, but all the signs are positive and all successful teams are built with a solid foundation at the back.
There is certainly a lot more confidence new in the back four with colossus goalkeeper Edouard Mendy also bringing so much to the XI, which allows the rest of the team further up the pitch to be creative.
Chelsea’s defensive midfielder N’Golo Kante is another that has to be credited for the dirty work he does in front of the back four and everything seems very rosy right now around the club.
