Chelsea fans should not worry just yet. They have a five-point cushion in the race for a top-four place and are in a good position to qualify for the Champions League. However, a worrying statistic is beginning to emerge for the young Blues side.
Despite winning 26 points in the Premier League so far, none of these have come from a losing position (Opta). Chelsea has fallen behind in four games this season and was unable to turn it around on any of those occasions.
Just yesterday, Lampard was asked about the worrying lack of fouls against West Ham. He stated a lack of urgency and intensity was present in the defeat. Is this current squad also lacking the character to come from behind to win points?
This is something that will feel particularly alien to Chelsea fans. They are so used to Chelsea teams being extremely good at turning games around from losing positions and getting a point or even all three.
It is hard to pinpoint the reason behind this statistic, although the lack of experience of many of the Chelsea squad could be a factor. Senior players, who have experienced several moments with large amounts of pressure are better equipped to deal with going behind. This is purely from dealing with it more.
There is also the possibility that the stat is purely a coincidence. It has only happened four times this season so the sample is not big enough to draw a fair conclusion. However, if the Blues go much longer without gaining points from a losing position, questions will start to be asked.
