'That's why': Lampard comments on Jorginho's reaction to being benched
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard said he is pleased with Jorginho’s response after recently being left out on the bench and reiterated why the midfielder is the club’s vice-captain.
As the manager confirmed N’Golo Kante and Billy Gilmour are out of the team due to injury, Jorginho is clearly an obvious choice for the deep midfielder role.
The 28-year-old’s 15-minute cameo against Crystal Palace was his only appearance since the Premier League restart, despite having featured 26 times in 29 Premier League games prior to the lockdown.
Lampard, however, refused to confirm his team selection, although he delivered positive news about Mateo Kovacic’s return from injury.
Asked whether Jorginho will have something to prove should he reclaim his spot in the team, Lampard told the media (as quoted by Goal’s Nizaar Kinsella): “We will see, in terms of selection (for tomorrow’s game against Sheffield United), but I don’t think there is a point to prove.
Jorginho previously said he respected Lampard’s decisions and will just keep his focus on training and helping the team (Chelsea’s official website).
About Jorgino’s response, Lampard said: “I am very pleased and it is what I expect of players I want at the club.
“You go through moments out of the team or that are difficult individually. You have to be tough, that’s why I made him vice-captain initially.”
