'They're not good enough': Pundit picks out three Chelsea players responsible for Sheffield defeat
Pundit Micah Richards has named three Chelsea centre-backs who are not up to standard after a devastating 3-0 loss against Sheffield United.
It was an underwhelming performance from the whole team, both defensively and offensively.
Again and again, Frank Lampard’s men could not convert their superior possession into goals.
But conceding three goals from Sheffield United, who have scored the fewest goals in the top half of the Premier League table, has raised the biggest concern.
Although Lampard’s system should also share the blame, former Manchester City defender Richards believes the three central defenders available were not up to standard.
He told Sky Sports (as quoted by the Football London): “(Andreas) Christensen, (Kurt) Zouma and (Antonio) Rudiger, I’m not one to criticise players but for the level they want to go to, they’re not good enough at this moment in time.
“They brought on Rudiger in the second half to sure things up and he ended up costing a goal.
“I can understand Frank’s frustration there.”
Richards also said the pressure from Leicester City and Manchester United had an effect on Chelsea’s performance.
As things stand, Chelsea could be fifth by the time they face Norwich City on Tuesday, July 14.
“It’s the pressure as well. Chelsea have got teams just behind them,” said the former England international.
“They know if they slip up, Sheffield United can play the game with freedom because they’ve already done what they needed to do.
“Sometimes, the expectancy of achieving something becomes far greater if you’re a bigger club, let’s say.”
