Mateo Kovacic and Thiago Silva were among the Chelsea players involved in training ahead of tomorrow’s Champions League game against Sevilla.

The pair were missing from Frank Lampard’s team sheet for the Southampton game, with Silva having fitness issues after playing for Brazil and travelling back to London.

Kovacic’s case was a bit mysterious since there was speculation the midfielder’s wife, Izabel, gave birth to their child last week. However, a report from Football London claims he took part in a “rigorous” warm down alongside unused subs after the game.

And it’s safe to say the game could have ended differently had both been available.

Former Blues defender Frank Lebouef said Chelsea missed Silva’s leadership in defence.

“It’s crucial for Chelsea to have a real leader at the back and that’s the main problem,” he told ESPN FC after the game.

Meanwhile Kovacic’s absence meant Lampard had no midfielder available on the bench as he had to deploy Reece James as a makeshift midfielder.

The good news is Silva and Kovacic should both be in contention for the Sevilla game as they took part in today’s training sessions.

In other news, Sevilla have announced the 22 players manager Julen Lopetegui has brought to London for the match.
