Former striker turned pundit Garth Crooks has been full of praise for summer Chelsea signings Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy after their brilliant performances in the Manchester United stalemate.
It wasn’t the best day for Chelsea attackers but, defensively, Frank Lampard’s men looked solid at Old Trafford.
There were a few moments when the home team looked close to breaking the deadlock but outstanding displays from Silva and Mendy in particular bailed them out of trouble.
Unsurprisingly, the pair made Crook’s team of the week – and the former Tottenham Hotspur forward was certainly impressed by Silva’s fitness considering his age.
He told BBC Sport: “Chelsea have not had a player at the back like this for some time. Defenders don’t come more accomplished than Silva.
“The former Brazil international has brought a desperately needed calm to the Blues’ defensive line-up. His positional sense and reading of the game are his specialities.
“Had it not been for Silva, his former Paris St-Germain teammate Edinson Cavani would have almost certainly found himself on the scoresheet.
“At 36, Silva looks like he’s never been in a pub in his life. What a pity for Chelsea he’s not a few years younger.”
Crooks also had positive words for Mendy, who was officially named man of the match in the United game for four remarkable saves, although the former PFA chairman still wants to see consistency from the the 28-year-old.
“It’s early days but if the two saves by Mendy against Manchester United are anything to go by, Chelsea may have found a decent goalkeeper at last.
“This is now about consistency – and Mendy has that to prove. But so far, so good.”
