Thomas Tuchel says he may try 22-year-old in Chelsea midfield

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has admitted that he could try talented youngster Trevoh Chalobah in a midfield position at some stage.

Chalobah, 22, has been a hot topic of conversation at Stamford Bridge at the start of this season.

The Blues academy graduate played every minute of the club’s UEFA Super Cup final against Villarreal. Also, he played every minute in the Premier League victory at the weekend over Crystal Palace.

It’s been an intense start to his first-team career with Chelsea and he’s had to be patient after coming through the academy system.

He’s had a number of loan spells in the past, including an impressive one in France last season with Ligue 1 club Lorient.

Tuchel opted to integrate him into the senior group after an eye-catching pre-season and he’s been the surprise package.

The England Under-21 international has been brilliant as the right-sided centre-back in defence during the last two appearances. It looks comfortable for him in that back three, but he’s played in midfield at various stages of his career before, too.

Tuchel indicates he’s spoken to Chelsea staff about Chalobah’s role on the pitch. He’s suggesting that he could play in central midfield in the future, but likes him adjusting to senior football in defence.

“For us, he’s only played in the back three, so right now I would say these are the three positions he can achieve the most on the high level,” Tuchel said

“It’s only my opinion after six, seven weeks. There is enough room, enough space, and enough time for him to convince me that he is maybe even a solution for us as a fourth midfielder.

“At one time we will maybe try it… We have this in mind. We just talked on the pitch about it within the staff because he was doing a good ball possession exercise in the middle of the pitch. I just asked the same question could he be the number four solution [in midfield]. I think now is not the time to confuse him and try too many roles.”

Chalobah position should remain in Chelsea defence

For now, Chalobah needs to have full focus on playing at centre-back. Fortunately, Tuchel’s comments suggest that is the case.

It’s going to be extremely tough to maintain his spot in the XI, but right now he’s the in-form player that is starting on merit.

It’s a massive step for him having worked his way into Tuchel’s plans. He will now be like a sponge learning from teammates such as Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta.
