‘Top player’: Joe Cole likens Chelsea star to Jamie Vardy

Joe Cole has given his full support to Chelsea forward Timo Werner, who he’s compared to Premier League and Leicester City ace Jamie Vardy.

Werner, 25, has been heavily discussed during his first year in English football.

The German attacker has 10 goals in 41 appearances so far since his arrival at Stamford Bridge. Unfortunately, that’s fallen well short of expectations due to the fact he scored 95 times in 159 matches for previous club RB Leipzig.

He’s a speedster that is so difficult for defenders to stop when he gets going, but his finishing has been erratic.

Pundit and ex-Blues star Cole feels though that Chelsea have their very own Vardy.

He’s predicting that Werner can be a hit in the Premier League, and sees similarities with Leicester’s talisman in his style of play.

34-year-old Vardy, who has 115 Premier League career goals, has made his name tormenting defences with his work-rate and speed.

“He’ll still come good,” Cole told talkSPORT (9:25pm, 16 April).

“Timo Werner scored 30 goals-plus in the Bundesliga last year. He’s not settled as well as he would have liked, but there is enough quality there.

“He’s not cultured, he’s not a Dennis Bergkamp, but he’s a runner, he’s a hustler, a bustler like a Jamie Vardy.

“I think he’ll season as he gets older and he works on things. I have no doubt he’s a top, top player.”

TBR’s View:

Thomas Tuchel has opted to take Werner out of the starting XI in recent games, and pulling him out of the firing line may pay off in the long run.

There are teammates right now in better form than him, but it would be foolish to write off his Chelsea career less than a season into it.

He’s certainly chipped in with some key moments already this campaign, proving he’s got the quality to be a success, and he just needs to put it all together.
