Thomas Tuchel said he is happy that Chelsea have players who can score from various positions on the pitch but eventually wants to see his strikers top the club goalscoring charts.
So far in the Premier League, Romelu Lukaku is still the top scorer at Chelsea with three goals, followed by Ben Chilwell and Trevoh Chalobah with two each.
These are, of course, surprisingly low considering Chelsea (16) are only behind Liverpool (22) in terms of goals this season.
To put it into perspective, Liverpool have three of the most productive players in the league so far in Mohamed Salah (7 goals), Sadio Mane (5), and Roberto Firmino (4).
How are Chelsea only five goals behind Liverpool? The answer lies in the distribution of goals.
Chelsea have the highest number of goalscorers (12) in the league this season, including seven defenders.
While Tuchel believes having various goalscoring threats will only benefit the team, he also does not want a repeat of last season’s goalscoring record.
Strikers should be top scorers at Chelsea, says Tuchel
“It’s good, we want to be stronger in set-pieces than the last half a year,” the German told Chelsea TV on having a lot of goalscoring defenders in his team.
“Maybe at the moment, we have [a lot of] defenders in the box [during set-piece situations], and maybe we need a little bit of luck to continue our streak like this.
“Anthony [Barry] is working with his team at the highest level on set-pieces to have variations and be decisive every game.
“We’re happy about it. It’s a good sign that we can score from any position and be dangerous at any moment of the game.
“Still, in the end, you want your strikers to be the top scorers, not Jorginho again from the penalty spots.”
Jorginho led Chelsea goalscoring charts in the Premier League last season with seven penalty goals, followed by Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, and Timo Werner with six each.
Although, Abraham and Werner actually outscored Jorginho in all competitions, having scored 12 goals each.
This season, Lukaku, who is virtually a guaranteed starter when fit, obviously has the biggest chance to finish the season as the club’s top scorer.
However, he has failed to score in the last six games for Chelsea after such a bright start to the season. Perhaps sharing spot-kick duties with Jorginho could help Lukaku’s case, as some Blues fans suggested earlier this season.
