Tuchel suggests January Chelsea recall is unlikely for 21-year-old despite his impressive form
Thomas Tuchel admitted it is hard not to notice Conor Gallagher’s good form at loan club Crystal Palace but also played down the possibility of a Chelsea recall in January.
The 21-year-old, who has had three goals and two assists in the league this season, has had a fine season at Selhurst Park so far.
Ian Wright recently even claimed that Gallagher has already made a very strong case for his inclusion in Tuchel’s squad with his consistent performances at both West Brom and Palace.
Tuchel, however, seems adamant that Gallagher should continue his progress at Palace first.
“Well, that’s not hard to follow because he is standing out every single matchday,” the Chelsea manager said when asked whether he is keeping an eye on Gallagher’s performances.
“All the credit to him. We had long talks in pre-season, we could imagine he stayed and fought for his place here. But after a talk with Patrick Vieira, he wanted the challenge at Crystal Palace, and we agreed to it.
“Conor’s heart is so, so big and he loves football. You can wake him up at 4 o’clock [in the morning], and he will start running, sprinting, collecting balls, and winning duels.
“This is what he does.
“But, honestly, right now he is an important member of the Crystal Palace squad, and it is good [for him being there], so no need to change this.”
Tuchel in no immediate need of new midfielder at Chelsea
While Gallagher can certainly add another dimension to the Chelsea midfield, Tuchel has obvious preferences for his senior options; Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, and Mateo Kovacic.
Behind these three, Chelsea also have Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who is also in good form, as well as Ross Barkley and Atletico Madrid loanee Saul Niguez.
Chelsea would have to offload one of them before they could add Gallagher into the team, and it is unlikely to happen in January.
