Two Chelsea youngsters make 60-man shortlist for 2020 Golden Boy award

Two Chelsea youngsters Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ethan Ampadu have been named in 60-man shortlist for the 2020 Golden Boy award.

Hudson-Odoi and Ampadu made it into the 60-man shortlist for the award as released by Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport.

However, it’s safe to say the Chelsea pair did not have the seasons they would have hoped for.

After missing out the first few weeks of the 2019/20 season due to Achilles injury, Hudson-Odoi had a few other injury spells holding his progress and limiting his minutes on the pitch, including his latest ankle injury.

The England international made 22 appearances in the league but featured as a starter in just seven of them.

It was not so different for Ampadu in his season-long loan spell at RB Leipzig.

He had a four-month spell away from the pitch due to a severe back problem from February until June and consequently had a tough time to make into the team.

The Wales international made just three appearances from the bench in Bundesliga, although he had two starts in the Champions League including his positive display against Tottenham Hotspur back in February.

Given Hudson-Odoi and Ampadu’s lack of playing time, it is already surprising that they make it into the final 60.

A few names who are the favourites to win the award are Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland,  Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, Real Madrid’s Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior and Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood.

Another Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour was initially among the 100-man shortlist but failed to make the 80-man list.
