'We were told': Journalist claims Tuchel's sat with Abramovich and told him to sign 20-year-old for Chelsea
Ian McGarry from The Transfer Window podcast reported that Thomas Tuchel has told Roman Abramovich his ideal Chelsea side for next season.
According to their sources, Tuchel spoke to the Blues owner almost immediately after the Champions League final victory to lay out his future plans.
Chelsea are already plotting several big moves in the summer transfer window, ones that mainly revolve around Erling Haaland.
McGarry said personal terms had already been confirmed between Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea for the 20-year-old; now a fee just needed to be agreed upon.
Landing the superstar striker would enhance Chelsea’s chances of winning the Premier League, by giving them a focal point in attack.
Tuchel would also be able to build his team around Haaland, rather than trying to fit expensive pieces into a complicated puzzle.
Thomas tells Roman his plans
According to McGarry, the Blues boss is well aware of his best line-up, permitted they sign Dortmund’s prized possession.
He said: “We were told that two days after the Champions League final win, Roman Abramovich sat down with Thomas Tuchel and several other members of the Chelsea hierarchy, so Tuchel could present to them how he would go about playing next season in order to win the Premier League title and the personal he required to do so.
“Haaland would play as a point striker with a mixture of, obviously because they have so many attacking midfielders, Werner returning to his more familiar position on the left side of attack.
“Mason Mount at ten, Kai Havertz/ Christian Pulisic/ Hakim Ziyech all fighting for places across that three.
“Then Jorginho and (N’Golo) Kante as the double pivot.”
Changes afoot for Chelsea
Moving Werner out wide seems like the logical solution, especially with Haaland potentially taking the main centre-forward slot.
Mount has pretty much played his way to undroppable status. Tuchel must now decide which of his pricey extras he will involve or leave out.
And this isn’t even including the defensive situation.
A new centre-back is also on Chelsea’s radar. As is Achraf Hakimi of Inter Milan, who can play right-back or wing-back.
Land the Moroccan international and Reece James may find himself as a central defender, which in turn displaces one of Tuchel’s current options.
Expect a largely altered look to the Blues when they face Crystal Palace on the league’s opening weekend in two months’ time.
