Who is Bruno Guimaraes and should Chelsea fans be excited?
According to The Daily Mail, Chelsea have reignited their interest in Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. But who is he, and should fans be getting excited about the links?
Guimaraes is a 22-year-old defensive midfielder who currently plays for Athletico Paranaense. He made 25 appearances in the league last season was also regular in their Copa Libertadores matches.
The Brazilian is a player who enjoys having the ball at his feet. He can drive with it, as well as possessing the ability to dictate the play from a deep position. He would likely come into the Chelsea team as back-up for Jorginho in the deep-lying midfield role.
Guimaraes made his maiden appearance for the Brazil U-23’s this year, but is the holder of a Spanish passport. Chelsea were reportedly interested in him before their transfer ban and could be ready to make a move now the ban has been lifted.
London rivals Arsenal are also reportedly interested. Both clubs have sent scouts to watch the midfielder in action in Brazil and could find themselves in a transfer tug of war. Despite being a deep-lying midfielder, Guimaraes does pose a goalscoring threat. He scored four times for Paranaense last season and provided three assists for teammates.
However, Chelsea currently have an abundance of midfield options. The likes of Billy Gilmour and Connor Gallagher will be hoping for more chances at Stamford Bridge next season and signing a relatively unknown quantity in Guimaraes could have detrimental impacts on their development.
