Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s return from a nasty ankle injury has been a long time coming, and it seems that the 23-year-old will finally make his return to the matchday squad in the coming weeks. However, with the sublime recent performances of the Chelsea midfield, will he have difficulty regaining a starting spot?
RLC had finally broken into the Chelsea team after years of going out on loan or being on the fringes. He was becoming a key part of a team who finished last season strongly, but a cruel injury in a bizarre pre-Europa League Final friendly has left him out of action for what is now six months.
There is no doubt that the midfielder will be chomping at the bit to get back into first-team action, but the rest of the Blues midfield is not going to make it easy for him to regain his position as one of Chelsea’s key men.
Kovacic and Jorginho have been like new signings this season, with the pair forming a formidable partnership which is both industrial and easy on the eye.
Then there is, of course, N’Golo Kante, who speaks for himself. Despite struggling with some injury problems himself, the Frenchman has got to be one of the first names on the team sheet. Add Mason Mount, who again has been brilliant this season, into the mix and you’ve got four options for three spots at most. It certainly isn’t going to be easy for Ruben.
However, the Chelsea hierarchy has shown their faith in Loftus-Cheek by giving him a new deal with the club in July. Chelsea fans were delighted with this news, and it will not be long before we are all reminded of the unique abilities that he possesses.
Still just 23, he will only get better.
If he can perform to the level he was at last season, it won’t be long before he grabs Lampard’s attention and provides the boss with a real selection headache.
