Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek has claimed that his £22million teammate is someone who’s always talking on the pitch.
Loftus-Cheek, 25, has revealed that Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is a huge vocal presence within the team.
Mendy, who moved to Stamford Bridge from Rennes last summer, has become a household name in a little under 18 months.
The 29-year-old shot-stopper is a colossus in the Blues net that was part of the group that won the Champions League final last season. However, the Senegal internatonal has arguably taken his game up another level again during his second campaign in London.
Mendy already has nine clean sheets in his 15 appearances this season for Thomas Tuchel’s side. Overall, his phenomenal record in a Chelsea shirt is 34 clean sheets in 59 games.
He’s become renowned for his athletic saves and commanding aerial presence in-between the sticks. But, Loftus-Cheek has given an insight into the Chelsea number one by saying he’s extremely loud talking in matches.
“He’s been fantastic for us this season. Some of the saves he’s made have given us three points, and that’s all you can ask from a keeper,” Loftus-Cheek told Stadium Astro.
“The communication from him on the pitch, you probably don’t hear that from watching on TV and in the stands, but he’s always communicating with us players and making sure everyone is in the right positions.”
Chelsea have outstanding number one
For Chelsea, they’ve struck gold with the signing of Mendy.
He’s now making a mockery of his £22million transfer fee because he’s worth so much more right now.
He makes the defence in front of him feel safe and it’s the hallmark of a great goalkeeper that he’s brave enough to be extremely vocal.
Mendy is statistically second in England’s top four divisions this season for best save success rate.
Mendy masterclass v Brentford
Mendy has come up with several brilliant individual displays in a Chelsea shirt, but his performance against Brentford earlier in the Premier League season must be the most memorable.
Blues defender Ben Chilwell called him “amazing” after so many vital contributions in the October fixture away to Brentford. For example, he made a jaw-dropping save inside the box late on from Pontus Jansson.
He’s a pivotal figure in the title bid Tuchel’s side are trying to mount.
