Ziyech explains Lampard's promise that convinced him to join Chelsea
Hakim Ziyech said he had a lot of contact with Chelsea manager Frank Lampard before agreeing to join the West London club.
Ziyech’s summer transfer was announced in February after Chelsea made an agreement with Ajax for the Morocco international. He has agreed to a five-year deal and is supposed to join Lampard’s squad next season.
The winger, who turns 27 today, told Chelsea official website he feels “happy, proud, excited” and cannot wait for the transfer.
He added: “Chelsea is a big club in a big competition. I like the style of play, they play really attacking football and that is something that fits me. It is one of the biggest reasons I chose therefore.”
He also stated that Lampard played a huge role in convincing him to take the leap to the Premier League, saying the manager promised him “a big role” at Chelsea.
“We had a lot of contact in the last couple of weeks [before the transfer was agreed] and he gave me a good feeling. That was also big to do with the decision,” he admitted.
It is not surprising Lampard described Ziyech as “a fantastic player who scores goals and assists”. He has an average goal involvement of nearly one every game, having scored six goals and provided 12 assists in 21 appearances in Eredivisie this season.
However, it seems Lampard must wait a bit longer than the initial agreement. Ziyech is supposed to join his squad on July 1 but Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar recently said there could be a delay to the transfer due to Eredivisie postponement amid the global health pandemic.
