Paul Merson was spot on with pre-season comments about Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell

Chelsea were extremely busy in the summer transfer window a few months ago, bringing in a wave of talented players to strengthen the group and the results are showing on the pitch.

The Blues qualified top of their group in the Champions League, while domestically they are currently third in the Premier League table just two points off the summit.

Amid all the exciting new faces arriving at Stamford Bridge was £50million signing (Sky Sports) Ben Chilwell from Leicester City, who in truth some were questioning before he’d even kicked a ball.

The 23-year-old left-back arrived with a big price tag from Premier League rivals Leicester and there were doubts over whether or not defensively he could be an upgrade on Marcos Alonso.

Merson stuck his neck on the line before the league season by claiming Chilwell would be a “great signing” and he’s nailed it with his comments.

“Chelsea have bought brilliantly. Ben Chilwell is a great signing. Yes, Marcos Alonso delivered goals, but Chelsea were weak down the left last season and needed a full-back to defend,” Merson told Sky Sports in September

Chilwell looks like he’s been around the Chelsea group for years the way he’s settled so quickly, integrating particularly well with the young English core within the squad.

The speedster has cemented his full-back position and offensively he looks a massive danger, scoring two goals and setting up three assists already.

But it’s his defensive work that’s been most impressive, as he’s become a part of a backline that is much improved and it’s a massive help learning off experienced centre-back Thiago Silva.

He is England’s first-choice left-back that looks like he’s getting better each game and could be a major part of Frank Lampard’s team moving forward into the future.
