‘Absolutely class’, ‘Superb’: Some fans rave about Tuesday display from their 19-year-old Chelsea loanee

Ian Maatsen completed 90 minutes last night for Coventry City in the Championship – and some of their fans on Twitter were raving about the display of the Chelsea loanee.

Maatsen, 19, is an exciting young talent that Thomas Tuchel’s side sent out on a season-long loan in the summer.

He’s been on Chelsea’s books since 2018, making one first-team appearance for the reigning champions of Europe. However, he’s dropped down to the Championship this campaign to continue his development.

Maatsen was part of the Coventry XI that ended up drawing 0-0 with rivals Birmingham City on Tuesday night in a league encounter.

The left wing-back was one of the few that provided a real spark on the pitch, including a driving run forward that got fans off their seats before appeals for a penalty were denied.

Also, Birmingham’s Ryan Woods was shown a straight red card for a foul on Maatsen inside the final 10 minutes. In fairness, he was extremely unlucky to be sent off for a cynical challenge that most would agree deserved a yellow.

Chelsea talent Maatsen popular

A selection of Coventry supporters on social media feel that Maatsen was outstanding against Birmingham.

The Dutch teenager has incredible speed and athleticism to help him constantly fly up and down the left flank.

His success in a wing-back role in the Championship must be something Chelsea boss Tuchel is aware of.

Blues right wing-back Reece James was once starring in the Championship on loan with Wigan Athletic, but is currently one of the world’s elite full-backs. Tuchel called him a “pleasure to watch” after his latest display.

Maatsen would surely love to follow in the path of several Chelsea first-team players.
